Canada gets tough with Chicago gun dealer (1)

Posted on 17 November 2008 by Jack

TORONTO — Canadian officials have told the United States they want to bring a Chicago gun dealer to Toronto to stand trial on charges of smuggling more than 200 handguns across the border.

The case, which may be a first for Canada, appears to signal a harder line against gun smugglers as Toronto grapples with a rash of gang-related shootings that have claimed several innocent bystanders.

Seventy per cent of the crime guns seized by Toronto police have been smuggled into the country from the United States. There have been 211 shooting incidents in the city so far this year, 35 of them homicides.

The extradition case against Ugur “Mike” Yildiz began on Aug. 18 but was kept under seal until late Friday, when a Chicago court released documents showing that Toronto police have charged the Turkish-born American with conspiracy to traffic firearms.

According to the Chicago court documents, “Yildiz smuggled 234 firearms into Canada from the United States, in violation of Canadian law. To date 27 of these firearms have been recovered, all registered to Yildiz. Two of the firearms registered to Yildiz were used in attempted homicides in the Greater Toronto Area.”

The complaint filed by Sheri Mecklenburg, the Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago, adds that, “The Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario, Canada, has represented that a formal request for an extradition will be submitted within the time specified in the [Canada-U.S. extradition] treaty or within a reasonable time.”

Note:  4:41  pm and I’m getting tired of it all perhaps because of my medical condition.   I don’t know but before I say something I will regret I will say “goodnight”.

Goodnight everyone and “drive safe”.

Winter is upon us.

I can state based on personal experience that for decades any two bit low life has been able to forge a personal relationship with an American gun shop owner. All that is then required is to place an order for handguns by phone. When the shipment arrives, a quick phone call, the Canadian smuggler picks up the order, pays cash, then drives back across a farmer’s field or conceals them in one of the countless methods available (the only limit is imagination) brings them into Canada and sells them to anyone with the cash. These people, the dealer, the smuggler, the buyer and eventually the shooter have no conscience. It’s a win win situation for them and a lose lose for Canadians. Really, and special interest groups like the Coalition for Gun Control and their shreaking diploma draped but very nieve spokesperson Wendy Cukier steadfastly believe that imposing strict gun laws on law abiding Canadians is going to have any effect on this deadly serious problem. Going after the bad guys instead somehow just makes more sense……..at least to sensible people. Going after dealers like this American is long overdue. But let’s bring the hammer down on Canadian smugglers in a big way also. Mandatory lengthy prison sentences across the board, if only the opposition parties would support that.

    Finally!

Some sensible action on gun control: go after the criminals. What a novel concept to come from a Canadian government!

Yeah, yeah, big talk,”Canada gets tough with “sick-cago” gun dealer”.

    What’s he going to get?

    2 years less a day?

3 months in a provincial jail, parole and a whole bunch of new criminal contacts to unload the rest of his hidden stash.

He isn’t coming here anytime soon Mr G. I wouldn’t get exercised about it all. When the yanks are done with him then we start.

We’re just staking a claim on him.

Got your link, BTDT and it will be up tomorrow with a comment.

My view — cops carry such knives. I did myself after I had to borrow one from the crowd around a car accident in order to cut the seat belts and get the people out.

That night I went to a local Walmart and bought myself the best they had with a “4 inch blade”…sharp as hell…and it was on my belt for the rest of my career.

Point: A lot of cops are carrying knives on their utilty belts now for just that purpose.

What did I do with the knife when I retired?

I gave it to a young officer that didn’t have one.

We need to stop and think about this.

It’s horrible to feel punk, Jack. I know all about that. Try this please. Steeped black tea, real lemon and real honey (not the processed kind). Three four times per day. I’m just tomorrow going to send a letter out.

I didn’t know cops buy knives at Walmart. Shouldn’t they be supplied and of a certain model? Guess you were glad to give that away after decades. Some present that guy got.

Shortly after I got a badge, I got a knife from the S/Sgt who talked me into being a cop. I have it still but, being the sentimental type, I don’t carry it with my duty belt. Instead, I got a tactical knife designed for emergency duties including a punch for breaking tempered glass and a slot for cutting seatbelts.

  10. Mac Says:

As far as banning knives, I hate to sound predictable but when did prohibition ever stop crime? All prohibition does is create a black market and make it so the bad boyz want in. Human nature.

Banning knives, especially based on criteria like 4″ blade would mean every punk would start carrying knives with 3.999999″ blades openly and a bigger knife hidden away.

Instead of blaming inanimate objects like guns or knives for violence, put the responsibility back on the violent criminals.
