Surly Beaver | Are the Tories tanking? Don’t bet on it.

Andrew Coyne appears to be wetting himself over polls suggesting that Tory support is sliding.

null

According to him the polls show the Tories dropping. Actually, the polls show the Tory support having increased twice throughout the campaign (around the 13th and 29th of September respectively) but then dropping back to similar levels (36-37%). Whilst this last week appears to have seen the Tories starting slightly lower than they have been for most of the campaign (around 35%) they slowly increased throughout the week until by Friday they were back up around 37%. However over the weekend their support appears to have slumped rather violently. I expect it is this, and not the general polling trends throughout the campaign which has Andrew so excited. It appears that the Tory support has suddenly begun to slide and that the Liberals are the clear beneficiaries.

I am hoping for a miracle now. I’ve been watching this election very closely and now feel that if PMSH and the Conservatives pull off even a minority it will be an amazing accomplishment given the level of attacks from the opposition, Danny Millions, the so-called Arts Community, the CBC, CTV, The Star, the Globe & Mail, and a host of others.

Even when the Liberals got nabbed for the sponsorship scandal, I don’t remember this level of bile and hatred being directed at them and they were proven crooks!

As a Westerner, the personal attacks on Mr. Harper and comments like “knuckledraggers” cut quite deep and now that there is a seeming acceptance by the eastern left that a carbon tax a la NEP is a good thing, I am of the opinion that this experiment called Canada has likely run it’s course. Unlike the east, we here in the West can make a very good run at things alone. Our self reliance bred from years of being stolen from and treated as “lower than” has made us very resilient and tough. Could The Republic of Western Canada be far off? I think I would support it.

Would it not be better just to cut the Quebec nation loose instead of us all going our own separate ways. They seem to be the biggest complainer in Confederation. Well, except the newest complainer, Danny Millions.

Sorry, it’s not just Quebec. Manitoba to the Pacific, US border to the Arctic. Hudson Bay makes a good demarcation line.

If western separation happens danny millions better get pumping that offshore oil , while it lasts . The $60,000,000,000.00 that flows from the oilsands to Ottawa every year will have to come from somewhere else to keep Ontario and Quebec happy . ABC will cost you danny .

    We can only hope, cantuc.

I think you’re getting ahead of yourself. The Conservatives are announcing their platform today - AFTER the opposition parties have displayed their policies, and with little time for them to respond, and no possibility for them to modify their positions to counter what Harper has to offer.

My prediction: a large number of relatively low-cost, family-centric goodies aimed at relieving the tax burden on the so-called “Tim Horton’s crowd” (that’s what used to be called the “middle class” to any urban elitists reading). A potential kicker: income splitting for families.

In the meantime, consider the apparent incongruity of seeing relentless ads in the media from the NDP, a smattering from the Liberals (they’d do more if they had the money), and, of course, the usual pro-leftist drum-beat from the MSM - while the CPC hasn’t put out any new ads or announcements in the last couple of weeks. This, from a party with a huge war-chest of funds available to it? I have no idea how far along the CPC is in using their allocated budget on this election; I get the sense that they’ve been holding back.

Holding back for the final stretch, as it were.
