North must end dependence on diesel, B.C. Premier says

Posted on 04 July 2008 by Jack

VANCOUVER — B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, responding to criticisms of the federal Liberal green plan by northern premiers, is calling for an end to a dependence on diesel fuel in the North.

“It’s time we stopped having diesel-dependent communities,” he said on Thursday. He had been asked for his view on suggestions by Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie that the green-shift plan proposed by federal Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion would hurt the diesel-dependent territories.

Making specific reference to the Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, Mr. Campbell said northern regions are grappling with rising temperatures.

“So northern premiers and all of us are going to have to figure out how we cut our greenhouse-gas emissions,” he said in an interview.

Mr. Campbell referred to B.C.’s Innovative Clean Energy Fund, a $25-million program created this year to fund the commercialization of clean, renewable energy technologies, as offering a course for action.

Mr. Fentie had raised his concerns about Mr. Dion’s plan following a meeting with two other territorial premiers last weekend, suggesting it could have a negative impact on northern communities that depend on diesel generators for household lighting during Arctic winters.

you know if he was paying his on way he would have the right to say something that dumb!

  2. Boudicae Says:

OKaaay. So, what does he suggest they replace the diesel fuel with? Solar power? Wind turbine? Nuclear plants? None of these are viable in the north. What an %$#!

    Wave the legislative wand. Done.

Gordon Campbell eagerly and conveniently changing the channel from trouble in his own backyard to the North. Blaming the North for using the least expensive best energy choice. Nice try.

The gas station near my sister’s place in North Vancouver raised their price on July 1 the required 2.4 cents per litre - except the 2.4 cents actually turned out to be more than 8 cents per litre.
To make matters worse, the $100 cheque from the BC government for my sister was sent to the wrong address. She was planning on using the $100 to fill up the gas tank on her (large) family’s two cars - both fuel-efficient Honda Civics.

Time to get out the sled dogs. Is EVERY Liberal an idiot?

  6. UV Says:

Is every lieberal an idiot? Just the ones who get elected!

  7. LG Says:

These Carboon Tax fools are painting themselves into a corner from which they cannot escape other than by admitting they were wrong on the AGW file. Once they make such an admission, they are politically doomed. They had better be down on their knees praying to Gaia that the economy turns around, because if it doesn’t, people won’t be very happy about their retirement funds begin blown out to pay a tax that funds a battle with a phantom.

Next move will be to raise the tax, but leave the $100 cheque frozen, to eventually inflate itself into irrelevancy. Meanwhile, what should have been a FLAT tax, but is NOT, has hitched itself onto the upward ride of oil prices.

    Massive, audacious fraud.

maybe he should take his winter holidays in Nunvaut instead of Hawaii. (sarc on) If we ceded the Arctic to the US and Russia the problem would be solved. (sarc off)

Gordo must be high from sniffing too much CO2.

Gordo’s conversion on the road to Kyoto is ten year’s of global cooling late and a carbon tax too much.

  10. Doubtful Says:

They say a picture never lies , and in this case it appears to be true. The premier looks stunned.

Our stunned bumpkin of a premier says “leadership is about knowing where you are going and trying to get there” - really? that sounds like a world war one general urging his troops to take that hill, without artillery or air support, while ignoring the enemies well defended position. We all know the tragic consequences of following such a leader.

A leader would have defined the problem clearly, analyzed resources at hand and set out a plan to achieve a task before presenting it his electorate. And therein is the problem, despite all the “science is finalized” nonsense, the electorate has realized this is a fraud, these blatherings are about additional taxation imposed to achieve what? nothing! there is no science that backs up a theory of excessive global warming, we have just experienced a normal cycle of climate.

Campbell is just another tax and spend liberal, who wants to experiment with some gee-whiz projects with your money.

“It’s time we stopped having diesel-dependent communities,” What a ignorant statement, as others have pointed out, if not diesel then what?

  11. Don Says:

The man is an ass. Don’t for one minute believe that this tax is anything other than a general revenue addition to put more money into his, wildly over budget, winter Olympics. (whoops, I think I remember that I am not supposed to use that word without buying permission to use same.)

To think I voted for this guy thinking that he would act in the best interests of the Province and its’ citizens but it turns out he cares only about the lower mainland which, in his mind, consists of only Vancouver, and to hell with seniors and TROBC.

Under the dreaded NDP we were still had an vibrant province even though they were a complete disaster. Under this guy we have steadily declined and his only response is to blame it on a beetle and to tax the hell out of us to replace his lost revenue from the forest industry which, to a large extent, is failing due only to his inability to do anything but raise taxes and spend them.

This guy is going to leave a legacy of being the worst Premier in the history of this province and I sincerely believe he doesn’t give a damn.He has secured his pension for himself and his political ilk and has made available hugely profitable business opportunities to a very limited number of buddies, all in the name of privatization, the latter of which he has operated on the theory of “- - - - - and damn the torpedoes”.

I know I sound bitter, but as a born and bred British Columbian I was used to enjoying a province that, up until the advent of the NDP and Gordon Campbell, was the best place in the world to live. My goodness how things have changed, little did I know that it was all due to diesel, lack of a carbon tax and a crummy little bug.

  12. Fred Says:

Just for clarification . . . he is a “BC Liberal”

The BCL party has no affiliation with the LPC. The BCLP is a coalition of “anybody but NDP”, with lots of Federal Conservatives and some Federal Liberals in the ranks and those pulling the strings.

  13. Jack Says:

Perhaps the “BC Liberals” need to go “out back” and sort it all out, Fred. The way we used to…remember?

Those were the days before people learned to scream “You can’t hit me, I’m wearing glasses.”

I always had a standard response to that:

    “Watch me.”

  14. Don Says:

But Jack could they watch you without their glasses? :- ))

  15. Peter Says:

Hey there fellow British Columbians. If we re-elect Campbell he will take it as a sign that his carbon tax is great and folks still love him and he’ll do more until we are all living in caves munching on dry granola. If we elect the BC NDP, the carbon tax will be repealed but there will be even bigger taxes put on industry who will pass it down and here we go again. And as for the Green Party….Oye Vay!

Vote for your local BC Conservative Party candidate. They are worth checking out.

  16. DWT Says:

‘Vote for your local BC Conservative Party candidate. They are worth checking out.

As far as I am aware, there is no candidate in my riding. If they were to mobilize and get the word out, they might stand a chance. As it it, I believe they are based out of Kamloops.

  17. Jack Says:

“So…where is the conservative party n BC?”

Somebody needs to put up a site with a tipjar. No telling what will happen next.

  18. MaryT Says:

Anyone wish for the return of Social Credit. Is there a BC conservtive party. If there is take out a membership and offer youself up as a candidate. Getting a name on the ballot with party affiliation might surprise a lot of voters and you just might get elected. In my prov riding there are a lot of upset voters who voted against the Alliance, thinking that if the PC candidate won he would get some high position. Didn’t work and now they are mad that his supporters lied when they said that.
Every vote counts, Hinman lost by about 8 votes, increased to around 30 after the recount. At least we had a choice other than lib or ndp.
