Sandy: Bernier affair & anti-conservative bias
Posted on 29 May 2008 by Sandy
So, it has come to this. Terence Corcoran is right. Far too many in the media and opposition are showing their anti-conservative bias so openly and frantically, they have lost all credibility.
As Corcoran writes: “For reasons of media and opposition bias that are all too familiar, the words of Ms. Julie Couillard are being accorded Triple A rating for credibility while whatever Prime Minister Harper says is being downgraded to junk.” In other words, people who should know better are accepting, as fact, everything Ms. Couillard says while simultaneously hinting that what the prime minister says is untrue.
Many of us, conservatives included, have asked what Maxime Bernier was thinking. However, now it is time to ask what the opposition parties are thinking, particularly Liberals, who, as Hunter so aptly describes as nearly “frothing” at the mouth as they get up in Question Period. Yes, they are fast becoming a joke.
Obviously, the Liberals don’t seem to have any idea how very desperate they are looking. This from the same party who dropped the Somalia inquiry and refused to answer any questions. Did the liberal biased media go after the Jean Chretien Liberals for that? Not as I recall. This from the same party of the HRDC million dollar boondoggle. And, this from the same party who brought Quebecers and Canada “Adscam.”
No, if this whole matter has become an international embarrassment, it is the opposition parties and the same media who are supposedly getting even with Prime Minister Harper and his government (for what I don’t know since they are not elected to do anything), that are fanning the flames at every opportunity.
Our Prime Minister is a class act on the international stage and he makes Canadians proud. It is the Liberals, in particular, who look like stagehands, shamelessly carrying on from the wings trying to get attention — “elect us, we would do better, elect us, we would do better.” Right, sure, they would have bigger and better scandals — and certainly more expensive for taxpayers.
My point, however, is that it is opposition and media behaviour that are fast becoming the story here — meaning it is no longer about Maxime Bernier. The opposition would do well to remember that Ms. Couillard is a private citizen and not beholden to parliament and parliamentary committees. And, Ms. Couillard and some in the media would do well to remember that there are defamation laws in this country. In other words, it is not only Bernier who should zip it!

Have any foreign media asked PMSH about this “scandal” or is it only the cbc hacks following him that are doing it.
Boags face is going to burst if he isn’t careful with his -gotcha-questions.
Just maybe the media and opposition will not like the answers if the RCMP get involved.
Adscam was mainly a Quebec scandal, and hurt the liberals badly. That alone proves liberals are capable of dirty tricks, so maybe they are trying to get even and hurt PMSH in Quebec with another Quebec scandal. Holland proved he is capable of mishandling files, supposedly left laying around.
If liberals are pure as driven snow in all this they will immediately bring the government down, or try to.
After all, this broke on a Monday, otherwise known as scandal day for the liberals.

I don’t think reporters are covering themselves in glory on this topic but in general I don’t mind the Liberal media holding MPs feet to the fire. It’s their job and keeps the politicians somewhat honest.
What gets my blood boiling is when the media turns into a Hallelujah chorus, which it pretty much does every time a Lib is elected PM, and they stop reporting scandals and the like. The Liberals seem to have this sense they are above reproach and can do whatever they wish because they best represent ‘Canadian values’ and the media does nothing to lessen their sense of entitlement.

I’d be asking some serious questions of civil servants in the employ of ALL Canadians at the Foreign Affairs Department, how supposed “secret” documents elluded their control for such a long time.
We have seen what uncontrolled civil servants at the CHRC are doing under the supposed watchfull eyes of the Justice Minister’s office and I, personally, have a growing file on the Canada Revenue Agency on their tactics used against this taxpayer to “increase rents” where no increased rents were applicable.
If Mr Dosanj has an “insideer” at Foreign Affairs, then they certainly are not working for Canada, they are working for the Liberla Party. Fire. Them. All.

As I pointed out yesterday, Bernier accepted responsibility and offered his resignation. Harper made the hard choice of accepting that resignation. Can you imagine any of the Liberals doing such?
May 29th, 2008 at 11:59 am
This “scandal” has made it into foreign media, papers and web sites. Even Al Jazeere! Why they would care is beyond me. Once again however you are throwing up past Liberal scandals to some how justify this event. I believe Harper has been part of the problem with his flippant answers to questions. Particularly silly was his claim within a few hours of the resignation that there was no security breach. How could he possible know? Once again he disappoints, he can do better than that.
I think both parties are doing what political parties always do. They are always right, the other guys are always wrong. We’ll find dirt on you and we’ll try to hide what we can.
Personally I don’t think many of them give a shit for me, you or anyone else. I argued against that idea for years but as the beard gets more gray I get more cynical.

The Liberals think they are saying: vote Liberal and you won’t have this problem because our guys are always “the honest broker” on the world stage.
But what Quebecers are hearing is:
Liberals are not honest, they have no opinion and they’ll back anybody that comes along. If the Liberals get in, then they’ll put in Denise Codere as Foreign Affairs Minister … the guy who is so reasonably accommodating that he marches with Hezbollah.
I trust Quebecers to say “no merci” on that idea.
Oh .. .and Larry .. that’s why Al Jezeera cares about this.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
CBC EX JOINED AL-JEZEERA. SO, ANY NEWS IS NOW AL-JEZEERA.
If the liberals ever get in again, the hezbollah, tamil ltte-tigers, al-qaeda and taliban will dictate the show-NOT THE LIBERALS NOR THE NDP. Don’t FORGET, the ndp and the bloc have shown support and rally behind the hezbollah.
CSIS will be working overtime to protect us from the liberals ‘friends.”
AND THE FAMOUS MSM will stand by and watch -AGAIN- WITHOUT WARNING US.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Yeah Larry, these papers were so sensitive that the information was available to anyone who cared to ask for it.
Thats how Mr. Harper knew there was no security breach.
May 29th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I was not aware the newspapers around the world had seen the actual file! Nor did I expect they’d be interested in Canada.
I still don’t know how Harper would know that in the month the file was misplaced nobody looked at it. Or, was the RCMP/CISIS watching the file with some kind of bug?
May 29th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
the liberals and their MSM are the ones to suggest that CSIS was involve IN Bernier’s case when in fact CSIS denies being involved..so where did UJJAL DOSANJH get this information from.?
May 29th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
We ALL need to stop looking for conspiracies. There just aren’t any.
In fact, I’ve decided not to write about it again because, by doing so, I am just keeping the issue alive.
Instead, what needs to happen, is everyone e-mail all the MP’s, who are making the ridiculous and outrageous allegations, and tell them it is they who are ruining Canada’s reputation abroad.
And to Liberals I would say this: you have cried wolf just one too many times.
Most Canadians are just tuning this whole thing out. For a political junkie, the fact that I haven’t watched the news in three days, says something.
May 29th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Sandy…you say “rediculous and outrageous allegations”.
If memory serves me correctly that’s all this whole affair was a week ago, now we have Mr. Bernier gone, and I would suggest that we are going to see more damaging revelation’s before this blows over.
No one should shed crocodile tear’s for any of the participant’s mixed up in this or because of the way the Liberal’s and the press are playing it, if the shoe was on the other foot would the Conservative do thing’s different? I think not.
May 29th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Further to my post…I will answer my own question this way…even though they did promise to do politic’s different then those bloody Liberal’s.
May 29th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Sandy, I also have not watched cbc for 3 days, no QP, no Newman and no National. Had my BP taken 2 days ago and it is almost below normal. Just told the doctor, stay away from the cbc.
May 29th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
the man acted like a fool, screwed like a fool, never grew up! made mr. Harper look bad’ made us all look bad. clean up the mess go on to a majoratie govmn’t. stop looking over your shoulder, people follow a leader, steve Harper is a leader.
May 29th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
“For a political junkie, the fact that I haven’t watched the news in three days, says something.”
It certainly does. It says that you cannot accept the facts. You do not see reality as it is. Your partisanship has totally blinded you. No one in any party wants to see an MP or Minister screw up, but when they do, one has to accept it for what it is and move on. Bernier is an idiot, a womanizer, an incompentent, a disgrace to his party and to Canada. I hope his political future is dead.
Couillard is a low-class, crass woman who has done and will do anything at all to enhance her wealth and prestige. Yes, she has looks, but I think guys should beware of her type. It bothers me that she is (financially) making the most of this. I have no sympathy for her.
May 30th, 2008 at 6:35 am
Actually Thinker, you haven’t done much thinking. It is the height of arrogance to suggest you know why I am not watching the news. Are you a mind reader as well? My not watching the news has nothing at all to do with partisanship. Like many Canadians, I am completely fed up watching Liberals froth at the mouth and liberal media bias.
In fact, no one else knows what anyone else feels like or thinks and its inappropriate to attribute such thoughts and feelings.
Say what you think and feel but don’t try to tell me or anyone else how he or she sees reality.
May 30th, 2008 at 8:25 am
this is already a dead issue if today’s headlines are any indication.
Between today and yesterday the Bernier circus is down by at least half in the commentary.
By Monday perhaps the rest of Canada will join me and care not at all.
May 30th, 2008 at 9:19 am
I haven’t bothered with it at all today. I’m tired of it and it’s time to move on..
May 30th, 2008 at 9:52 am
This Bernier issue is truly a “set up” just like the Cadman affair, the Mulroney allegation, and the many other weekly events. Next week will be another “flavour of the week”, just like Sandy, I am tired of the games played out by the MSM and Lib..ers, I have tuned them out long ago.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:06 am
The Liberals lost all moral standing with me a while ago, when Adscam was exposed, and when the figures for the gun registry were released. They have done NOTHING, NOTHING at all to repair that standing. Their idiotic spin tactics are an insult to the intelligence of Canadians. They must think we are complete fools.
The brown envelope party needs to do some soul searching, and start acting like adults before I would consider, for even a picosecond, giving them any further control over my life.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
The more I see the liberals at their worst behaviour in a parliament have proven to me that this prime minister STEPHEN HARPER must remain in government for a long time.
June 9th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Larry what kind of dope are you on.I have read nothing or heard anything in foreign papers regarding Bernier.Only coverage was when CBC reporters asked PM Harper about it during his european stops last week.Notice CBC,CTV reporters, not the foreign press. The Europeans couldn,t give a rats ass about Bernier or his talking notes. Its only the slime bucket MSM of Canada still trying to get at PM Harper with any method at their disposal.Well PM Harper is too honest for those anti Canadian MSM and too smart for the likes of Fife and company. So keep dreaming about scandals because they will turn into nightmares for the Liberals.
