Blue Like You | Deadline for public input tomorrow re: Pesticide Bill-64

I didn’t even know about this until I read a letter in today’s Record (from an environmentalist). The Ontario Government has requested public input into Bill-64 - Cosmetic Pesticides Ban Act .

Pesticide Reform Ontario wants this legislation changed so that municipalities are allowed to make the laws even tougher , as Dalton had mistakenly announced before his Minister corrected him. I thought the whole point was to have some kind of level playing-field.

I doubt that the lowly property-owner will win this battle, but please let your thoughts be known. And why are golf-courses exempt? Could someone please explain that to me? Are pesticides not harmful once you step onto the fairway?

Jack, I really appreciate you featuring this post today in view of the deadline. The government needs to hear from the other side.

I’m not in favour of unregulated pesticide use, but a product deemed safe by the Federal Government should be allowed for use if all proper directions are followed.

I’m in favour of the pesticides ban based on numerous studies that have linked its use to cancer, autism and a host of ailments. Think about it. Why would scientific studies point to its dangers? Knowing that it targets whole industries and their profit margins?

I just don’t get how people can be more concerned for their lawn’s appearance than for their children and grandchildren’s health.

I can see the problem with the golf course green where the game depends on its surface quality, but other than children caddies on the green, golf courses don’t have children regularly present or playing.

Many of these manufactured chemicals don’t interact with the natural ones present in the human body. To deny that fact now after bodies of evidence is foolhardy.

I may not agree with McGuinty on almost anything else. Here I do.

Elderly neighbours of my daughter and son-in-law have regularly treated their lawns professionally year after year, but this year they will leave it alone based on the fact that brand new life beside them is to be valued. They said, we forgot about the days when the wild look to any yard was considered beautiful. There are many kind, thinking seniors who may choose to think this way for the benefits of the rising generation.

..golf courses don’t have children regularly present or playing…

Actually, there are a lot of golf camps for kids in the summer, Anna.

  4. Anna Keightley Says:

Didn’t know that, Joanne. Minimizing exposure as much as possible is important the way I see it. You know that Swiffer product, lots of dog club members were using it in their households on floors, etc. and their dogs were dying of liver diseases, etc. Now they’ve all stopped using it and are monitoring their new dogs with the natural cleaners now involving vinegar, baking soda and lavender oils (natural disinfectant for hardwood floors, shines them, too). Anyways, whole dog clubs are monitoring their new dogs to see if they can avoid getting sick by their close proximity to things used on household floors. Minimizing exposure is all we can do and should do where we can.

  5. Joanne (TB) Says:

Well, that’s true Anna. And parents can always choose not to send their 8-year-olds to golf camp.

  6. Joanne (TB) Says:

BTW, are those dog clubs doing anything about trying to get Swiffer products banned from being sold in Canada?

  7. Ruth Says:

Like I said on Joanne’s site, I’d go along with this if they’d repeal the Weed Control Act in Ontario so that we aren’t forced to get rid of the 23 Noxious Weeds on the list. Why have weeds listed and no way to get rid of them on big properties.

  8. Anna Keightley Says:

Not that I know of Joanne, but I’ll certainly ask and let you know.
