Clinton, Obama Face Day of Reckoning on ‘Super Tuesday 2′

Posted on 04 March 2008 by Jack

HOUSTON — Barack Obama looked to Tuesday’s voting in four states as a chance to knock rival Hillary Rodham Clinton out of the Democratic presidential contest. Clinton saw the contests as an opportunity to end Obama’s streak of 11 straight victories and keep her candidacy alive.

On the Republican side, John McCain could clinch his party’s nomination with a strong showing in the primaries in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island.

McCain’s status as nominee-in-waiting has given rise to concern among senior Democrats that the party could suffer in the November election if the increasingly contentious nomination struggle goes much longer.

Spending the night in the same Texas city, both Obama and Clinton expressed confidence in their chances. But both teams acknowledged that split decisions and close votes could prolong the battle for at least another month — or more.

“We know this has been an extraordinary election. It continues to be. We’re working hard to do as well as we can,” said Obama, who planned to await the Texas returns in San Antonio.

“I’m just getting warmed up,” Clinton told reporters, a clear sign that she expects to press the campaign on beyond Tuesday no matter the outcome.

Former President Bill Clinton has asserted that his wife must win both Texas and Ohio to keep her campaign alive. On Friday, Hillary Clinton’s advisers recast the stakes, saying if Obama lost any of the four presidential primaries it would show Democrats are having second thoughts about him.

Obama has won 11 straight contests since Feb. 5, Super Tuesday, and leads in the Associated Press delegate count, 1,386-1,276. His margin is greater among delegates chosen in the primaries and caucuses, 1,187-1,035, while Clinton leads among party officials, known as superdelegates, 241-199.

I have no idea what is going to happen in today’s results but I am certain that it’s not a bad result for Democrats if the battle between Obama and Clinton continues for now. It keeps people talking about the race, the party, ideas - all good for Democrats I think. However, the Democrats do need to rally behind a nominee before their convention this summer. Personally, I hope Obama wins decisively and we never hear from the Clintons again.

Never hear from the Clinton’s again? Are you serious? If Hillary loses she’ll make the wicked witch of the west look like Mary Poppins.

  3. Jack Says:

I have to agree with BTDT. “Wicked witch of the west” just about sums it up.

Just a quick “heads up” regarding the featured article. I will try to find the top news story each day and feature it. The reason I switched to TWO featured articles is so yesterday’s entry will remain visible for at least 24 hours (and “yes” Ward. That is a Liberal house burning. “Gawd, you’re perceptive.”)

BTDT and Jack: I said ‘hope’ we never hear from the Clintons again. I know that is unlikely but I dare to dream! I am not certain how low Hillary will go tho. She has to think about 4 years from now, if Obama doesn’t win in November, and worry about party unity so she can’t go too nuclear or else Democrats disown her.

  6. MaryT Says:

According to Neman and Boag, Jack Laytons comments/questions/stmts re Nafta are showing up on Obamas web page, and getting more hits there than on his own.
The dire predictions the cbcers are projecting for Canada if Obama wins in Nov. Wont trust the PM re secrecy, no good relations with the Us, blah blah blah.
I thought Layton did not want close relationships with the US.

  7. Jack Says:

I added an update. People should read it. It would appear that Obama is going to look like a deer in the headlights in the time to come.

I’m calling it “McCain” — by a country mile.

  8. Jack Says:

Just aded a video. Obama = Layton?

    Who knew?

  9. Jack Says:

I will be sound asleep when the results come in on this situation. If somebody is awake “perhaps” (if they don’t mind) they can advise what happened.

  10. MaryT Says:

McCain has cinched the republican nomination.
    Huckabee withdraws.
    Obama wins Vermont 59-39
    Hillory wins Rhode Island 61-31
Hillory 58-Obama 40 in Ohio, no winner declared yet. (Nafta)
Obama 51-48 in Texas, no winner declared.
    As of 8.pm Alberta Time.

    The fight will go on.

  11. MaryT Says:

One female panelist just referred to Obama as an Etch a Sketch. Turn him over and he is somebody different.
Texax now 50-48 for the big O.

  12. MaryT Says:

    Clinton wins Ohio.
That has got to be a blow to Obama, and I bet he wishes he had never mentioned NAFTA. Cheers to PMSH for influencing the US election. (sarc off) 9.00pm AB time.

  13. MaryT Says:

After declaring Hillory the winner in Ohio, at least 15 minutes, was spent discussing Obama and NAFTA and the cdn government. Begala said Obama is not a leader because he should have fired the guy that told someone something different than what O was saying. Imagine, our government being discussed by all the talking heads on CNN. Wonder if they had to google Canada to see what it was and where it was. Remember, O once referred to the President of Canada.
Consensus is, Hillory will stay in but will have to go much more negative. Obama is going to have to fight back.
    Rush should be very happy.
Layton should be livid tomorrow in QP.

  14. A Running Commentary Says:

A lot of people point talk about Hillary’s “math problem” but let’s not forget how quickly the winds can change in politics. If she adds Texas to her apparent wins in Ohio and R.I. the race could shift considerably. She is winning the important general election swing states (Ohio, Tennessee, likely Pennsylvania) and if she makes this tight all the way Democrats are crazy not to pay attention to that. There are 3 more months of this for Obama to face some serious scrutiny. Does it get any better than this?

  15. MaryT Says:

    Hillory wins Texas.
11.pm, now I can watch the ctv news and go to bed.

  16. MaryT Says:

Several articles on how Canada could be punished over the Nafta leak. It sure got a lot of coverage on cnn last night. But, look at the bright side:
Hillory wins in Nov. and has to know the turning point came in Ohio, mostly because of the Nafta leak. Wouldn’t she have to thank Canada and be very friendly for 4 years.
Same goes for McCain, the Nafta leak finished off Obama, Hillory is the candidate he can beat, and does. Again he would have to thank Canada and be nice to us.
Who knows, it might lead to an invitation to spend a night in the famous bedroom at the White House for our PMSH.
Another good thing about this, americans now know who Jack Layton is via U-tube.
