Sandy: Ethics Committee Actions Appalling

Posted on 29 February 2008 by Jack

Liberals pride themselves on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As a country we pride ourselves on the presumption of innocence. Yet, in the Parliamentary Ethics Committee you are apparently guilty until you prove yourself innocent. It is nothing short of a partisan kangaroo court. Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, no matter what you may think of him, never had a chance.

Committee members, such as the NDP’s Pat Martin, were free to say anything, no matter how outrageous or defamatory — all the while hiding behind parliamentary privilege. The whole process has debased our government more than it already was – following the sponsorship scandal —  and it is utterly disgusting.

I agree with Robin Sears, in his analysis in the National Post today.

This is why I coined the phrase the “Lack of Ethics Committee”.

It just gets, as my great aunt in East Germany used to say tongue in cheek, “better and nicer in the East with each passing day”.

Of course in those days the ‘walls had ears’.

You see political opinions matter to your career advancement. Anyone associated with Brian Mulroney, would no doubt in Paul Szabo’s eyes, be guilty of high treason by association; even if it were a logical fallacy.

  2. Mac Says:

Hans, Liberals of Paul Szabo’s ilk don’t have a problem with logical fallacies. They embrace fallacy as a lifestyle choice.

I wonder why the Conservatives haven’t made complaints to the Ethics Commissioner about the actions of Gonzo Rodriguez and Paul Szabo? I’m sure Mary Dawson would be interested in their actions.

  3. Jen Says:

Did you hear Tim Powers on Mike Duffy, he was horrified that a liberal mp said in parliament, that Brian Mulroney should be arrested and lynched-The liberals are losing it.
Frankly speaking time to go the election and take the liberals ndp terrorists supporters to the people. I wonder if the people would surrender their lives to the NDP AND LIBERALS that supports terrorists criminals also to take the MSM to the people for lying manipulating the public.

The fact remains that the Prime Minister of Canada took $300,000 CASH from private interests. There is no innocent explanation for it. If you think so then maybe you can explain the innocence of Bill Clinton’s semen on Monica’s blue dress.

I really like the explanation that Mulroney did nothing “illegal”.

HELLO! It doesn’t matter if there is no Criminal Code section that says “Prime Ministers may not accept cash, only cheques.

It is ETHICS under consideration…look it up in the dictionary.

These senseless defences of Mulroney stun me. Canadians deserve the government they get.

  5. Jen Says:

It happened after Brian left office and was now a private citizen. funny part of it is that schreiber said so.

  6. Jen Says:

I also forgot to mention we want paul martin to give back $161millions which he took from all taxpayers to aid his shipping company which he has docked in barbados(bajan)waters simply to avoid paying back our money and taxes.
Plus, Chretien took in the million from taxpayers for his golf course and hotel. plus chretien sold very good heavy transport helicopters to the Dutch instead of giving them to our troops, because he chretien wanted to save money. yet the liberals stole in the millions that how much they wanted to save for themselves.

  7. Fay Says:

It is amusing to watch the CBC protray Paul SZabo as a “Father knows best” in all this. Anyone who has actually watched the committee knows better. Everything is being manipulated by CBC and GLOBE and MAIL. The unelected and unaccountable MSM is manipulating the Opposition. Some reporters are admitting to misgivings of MSM tactics. The weak follow for the lucrative chance to appear on CBC. And who pays for the CBC? All hard working, honest Canadians.

  8. Mac Says:

Weird Al, I’m not a Mulroney fan but I don’t understand why the basic presumption of innocence hasn’t been afforded to Mulroney.

The Liberals declared Mulroney to be guilty of taking kickbacks from AirBus in the court of public opinion and then ordered the RCMP to prove it. So far, not a single shred of evidence has been found to substantiate any link to AirBus whatsoever.
Now, years after the fact, the Liberal regurgitated Mulroney in a weak and misguided effort to smear Harper. In other words, the Liberals lied about Mulroney. What part of that isn’t clear?

Does that make Mulroney a model citizen? Not even close. His government represented the high water mark of the Red Tory movement and he should be applauded for saving the country from the near economic ruin which Trudeau created but Mulroney was almost as flawed as Trudeau in his own way.

I find it troubling that so many people who consider themselves to be conservatives (large or small ‘c’) jump onto that bandwagon out of dislike for Lyin’ Brian. At best, those of us who disapprove of Mulroney should still be objecting strongly to the misuse of the Ethics Committee for such partisan purposes AND the continued presence of Karl-Heinz Schreiber in our country.

Island MP said former PM should be hanged print this article
    WAYNE THIBODEAU
    The Guardian

A P.E.I. MP says he is going to issue a formal apology for suggesting former prime minister Brian Mulroney should be hanged.

Charlottetown MP Shawn Murphy made the comments while heckling another MP prior to question period Thursday.

“Get tough on crime, bring forth Brian Mulroney!’’ Murphy is heard saying in the House of Commons during a highly-charged debate on the passage of the Conservative government’s new crime bill.

“Hang him high, hang Mulroney! Let’s get this Mulroney before the courts as soon as possible and hang him high! We gotta get Mulroney, put a noose on his head, put a noose on his head. Get tough on crime.’’

The exchange was between Murphy and Ed Fast, the Conservative MP from Abbotsford, B.C.

Fast, who sits next to Murphy, rose to congratulate his party on the passage of his government’s new crime bill.

That’s when Murphy made the comments.

Murphy is head of the House of Commons public accounts committee.

In a statement issued to The Guardian Friday, Murphy said he is going to apologize.

“There was some overzealous heckling going on in question period (Thursday) afternoon — way too much actually — mainly because of the Cadman affair and the crime bill,’’ said Murphy.

“My comments were totally rhetorical in line with other heckling going on at the time.’’

Murphy went on to say: “On reflection, I agree that my comments were over the top and inappropriate, and I plan to make a full apology to the house when I return on Monday.’’

So now we have Shawn Murphy wanting to HANG former PM Brian Mulroney. An Irishman wanting to kill an Irishman with St. Patrick’s day just around the corner. What a way to start the month of March.

I thought the Irish signed a peace accord and now they want to start “The Troubles” here in Canada again? No doubt St. Patrick will be mighty displeased!!

  10. Mac Says:

The sad part is Murphy’s comments will play well on PEI and I’m willing to bet he’ll repeat his lynching call (sans apology) in his home riding over the coming months.

  11. Pat Says:

Ethics!! The actions of the members of the Ethics Committee were ethical? Pablo openly lied to Canada and nothing has happened to him. Szabo was in on the lie and nothing has come of it. Martin was insulting in a way that would have resulted in either physical damage or a law suit if it happened outside of said committee.

It makes me sick to see garbage like this representing Canada!!
